Literary Focus - Question 9 - Gentleman of Rio en Medio

I think if this story is from Don Anselmo’s point of view, I can understand more about his feelings and what he thinks. When he sold the house, why did he want to sell it to the Americans? Why did he say no when they offer more money to him? I want to know why he said the tree wasn’t his and it’s the children’s’. Why did he think the Americans are good people? Why did he sell the land with a low price? How does it show that he's a "gentleman"? Is the word "gentleman" shows that he thinks that Americans are good people? I think it'll be a lot different from the narrator's story.

The reasons are his father didn't tell Terry what happened, so he felt embarrassed and didn't understand how his father felt.I think the father should tell him, because when you talk to someone, it feels better. But Terry also should try to understand him and help him try to forget them. It is also better to know more. Terry didn't know much about Vietnam. After he knows about the war, it wasn't just Vietnam syndrome. It was the war from North and South of Vietnam, French and American. He can understand his father's stress and fear more. After his father told him the experiences, his father still has flashbacks, so Terry can help him by cheering him up. Then he can forget them slowly.

Love Conquers All
“Oh my God, it feels like nothing is in my brain. Can I really give the letter to him?” Luna thinks and standing in front of her school, waiting for someone. People are staring at her because she’s holding a letter with a red heart on it. She dresses in a bluish – black skirt and a white shirt with a thin red ribbon nicely fit in to her neck and a school jacket covering over her shirt. She has been standing here freezing for almost 10 minutes. Winter is coming soon, so the weather is making her lips drier. Here he comes, his name is Helios and he has an IQ of 200. He wears a school shirt and a red tie with a school jacket, dressing nicely as always. She gives the letter to him and he takes the letter and walks by. Not a single word comes out of his mouth.
Later, a voice comes out from somewhere. “Who is Luna?” He comes in the cafeteria and says out loudly. He walks towards her and hands her a letter and asks, “Are you Luna?” She nods her head slowly and opens the letter out and realizes that it is her own love letter. The letter is now covering with grammar and spelling mistakes in red pen with a big letter D-. Her mouth goes wide open, but she has nothing to say. He walks away and says “I hate stupid girls.” That sentence keeps staying in her mind.
She has to move out of her house because her father needs the money to open a small restaurant, so they’re homeless. Luckily, her dad’s friend helps him by asking them to stay at their house for a while, but guess what, readers? She is staying at Helios’s house!!! Her eyes and mouth are wide open and there’s only one word on her face; SHOCKED! Helios’s family even knows that she likes him and his mom totally loves it. Luna goes to her room with his mom and she is really surprised. The room is mostly pink with a small bed in it. Her big smile makes his mom feels happy. After she left for a second, Luna keeps jumping on her bed and can’t sleep that night; she can’t believe that she’s in the same house with Helios. But, Helios says he doesn’t like stupid girls like her and he looks even colder that before. He says he doesn’t want her to tell anyone that they’re living together. Last night, his mom gives her a picture of him making a silly cute face, and she shows him that picture. “So do you want me to show this to the whole school?” she says teasingly
“Hey, where did you get that?” he shouts in anger
“I got it from your mother, do you want this picture? Then try to get it,” she runs around after she said it. He chases with her and by the window, her friends, and the other students are getting more jealous.
“Got ya! Give the picture back to me!” Helios says and breathing hardly.
“Fine! Anyway, I got the film, so I can print out more,” she says in a cool voice.
“What do you want from me?” he asks after a while thinking.
“I want you to tutor me, you’re the smartest person in this school and you’re in Class A, who has an IQ of 200,” she says
“You’re in Class F, how can you get into the top 50 if you’re that stupid?”
“Hey, why do you have to be that rude? Do you want me to give every single person one of the pictures?” she says in anger. But, he finally except to tutor her. He can’t believe how stupid she is. Day by day, they both getting sleepier and sleepier and more tired, but she still tries her best to get on the top 50. The test day comes, she can’t sit normally, and keeps on studying, the nervous makes her forget what she has studied. “Good Luck!” that is the last word he says to her after he goes into his class. He doesn’t know that these 2 words can make her feel more confident. Finally, the result comes; they can’t believe that she gets in the number 50 of the top 50. She hands him the film of his silly picture and thanks him for helping her. She takes the lucky charm from his mom out. It makes everyone scream out loud. It is the picture of him and her sleeping on the desk while studying.  He runs to her class and pulls her out.
“Why did you show them the picture?” he says angrily. “I didn’t say anything; your mom took the picture and gave it to me. When I open it …”
“Why did you have to open it in the class?” he cuts her line out.
“I didn’t know anything!” she yells. They didn’t talk to each other until they both graduate high school. The picture fades out from people’s mind really fast. The last day of the year comes, he realizes that it’s time to make up with her, because she didn’t do anything wrong, so he takes her out.
“Why are you pulling me? I said I don’t like you anymore. I’m trying to forget you,” she says with some tears come out from her eyes.
“Are you trying to forget me? Then try to forget this,” he kisses her right after he finishes his words. Her eyes goes wide open like she always does when she gets shocked. Her mind goes empty, until he sticks his tongue and walks away. She sits down on the floor right after he left; her head is now full of questions. Is this kiss a joke or something? Why did he kiss me? Why can’t I forget him? Why did he say that don’t forget the kiss? Questions keep coming out of her mind and it makes her dizzy. She can’t sleep that night and keeps laughing and smiling.
The next day, Helios’s mom gives her two tickets for her and Luna to see a famous play. When Luna gets there, says she can’t come and let Helios come. She is surprised by him, but he tells her to focus watching the play. The play finally ends, they go out and he buys two teddy bears for them.
